Tiger kills one, injures two after escaping from US zoo

A tiger escaped from his cage in the San Francisco zoo and killed one visitor and injured two others before being shot dead.

NEW YORK: A tiger escaped from his cage in the San Francisco zoo and killed one visitor and injured two others before being shot dead.

It was unclear how the tiger escaped from his cage which is at the centre of the zoo.

The zoo had to be evacuated. Initially, zoo-keepers thought that four tigers had escaped but the other three never left their cages.

San Francisco Chronicle quoted Fire Department spokesman Lt Ken Smith as saying the tiger was shot dead while it was attacking a visitor. The attack took place in a cafe at the east end of the zoo shortly after closing time last evening.

The incident occurred exactly a year after a zoo-keeper was mauled during a public feeding. The State later had said the zoo was responsible because of unsafe configuration of cages.
