Tiger found dead in Kaziranga National Park

An adult Royal Bengal tiger was found dead in Kaziranga National Park on Sunday.

JORHAT: An adult Royal Bengal tiger was found dead in Kaziranga National Park on Sunday.

Divisional forest officer (Kaziranga) S K Seal Sharma said the carcass of the big cat was found in the Kohora forest range of the park.

“The tiger was an adult female animal and we have seen some injury marks on its body, but the exact cause of the death is yet to be ascertained,” he said

Sharma said preliminary investigation suggests the tiger might have died fighting with another tiger. In October, another tiger was killed in a territorial fight in Kaziranga.

After the recovery, officials of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) reached the national park. Veterinarians conducted an autopsy in the presence of the NTCA officials and burnt the carcass. Tiger carcasses are burnt to prevent illegal trade in tiger body parts in clandestine markets.

According to census reports, Kaziranga has about 118 tigers and this is the fourth tiger death in the park this year so far.
