Students in Kochi to plant four lakh seedlings on Environment Day

The district social forestry division will plant four lakh seedlings of 15 different tree species with the help of students in the city to mark World Environment Day on Tuesday.

KOCHI: The district social forestry division will plant four lakh seedlings of 15 different tree species with the help of students in the city to mark World Environment Day on Tuesday. The seedlings will be distributed to the students of class I to IX to plant trees in their homes.

The social forestry division is in the process of transporting seedlings to schools, and palmlets on how to protect the saplings will be given to the students. D Rajendran, assistant conservator of forests, social forestry division said, “A study conducted by us showed that 40% of the seedlings that were distributed last year is surviving. Steps will be taken to ensure that at least 60% of the seedlings distributed this year grows to become trees.’’
