NEW DELHI: Application of science can help in increasing forest cover, R K Pachauri, chairman of Nobel Award winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said on Friday.
"Forests are our biggest treasure. Today there are many stresses and challenges on the forest sector. Application of science can help in increasing forest cover," Pachauri said at a function organised to mark World Forestry Day.
S Raghupathy, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests said the institutional framework of forest development is shifting from regulatory to participatory mode of administration and will be more people-oriented in future.
He aid the major task of the government is to enhance afforestation.
The minister said to ensure better forest management, India is actively participating in different forest-related international projects.
"India has highlighted the gaps in the implementation of sustainable forest management in the decisions of Bali conference on climate change and other international forums," Raghupathy said.
Referring to this year's theme "Forest and Climate Change" he said the process of economic growth and development through industrialisation and urbanisation has led to emission of green house gases into the atmosphere leading to rise in the global temperature.
"The carbon dioxide is released mainly from burning of fossils fuels and urbanisation. We have to work very hard to increase land area under forest and achieve one-third area of the country under trees," he added.
