GUWAHATI: A one-horned male rhino was injured when poachers opened fire in the Kaziranga National Park leading to a gunfight between them and the forest guards.

Three poachers entered the Agratoli range of the park last night and fired on the rhino with an intention to smuggle out the carcass, officials said.

The forest guards on patrol alerted by the sounds of gunfire rushed to the spot where the rhino lay injured and engaged the poachers in a firefight.

The poachers, however, managed to escape. The injured rhino is under treatment, they said.
