Painting a grim picture of rising man-animal conflicts in the country, the government on Wednesday said as many as 1,090 people were killed by wild elephants, 11 by tigers and three by lions in various states in the last three years.
"The states have reported damages of 15,312 houses and 87,269 cases of crop damage by wild elephants in the last three years," environment minister Jairam Ramesh said in Lok Sabha while replying to a written question.
However, he said incidents of house and crop damages by lions and tigers were "rare and are not reported to the Central Government."
As per information submitted by states in respect to damages caused by elephants, a total amount of approximately Rs 30.29 crore has been paid as compensation in the last three years to the family of the victims, he noted.
