One held for trading rare conches

A businessman was arrested for allegedly indulging in trading of rare conches and seized 10 bags of them here, police said.

HARIDWAR: A businessman was arrested for allegedly indulging in trading of rare conches and seized 10 bags of them here, police said.

According to police, Ganesh, a wholesaler, who also owns a shop in Shantikunj area of the city was arrested following a raid by a joint team of police and an NGO Peoples for Animal (PFA) at various shops on Monday.

The businessman was possessing nearly eight species of rare conches in his godowns, they said adding that he has been booked under Wildlife Protection Act 1972.

Police said these rare conches were being sold by several shopkeepers in the city at the rate of Rs 500 per piece while they are worth lakhs of rupees in the international market.
