Olive Ridley Turtle rescued and rehabilitated in sea in Surat
Around 10-year-old mature male olive ridley turtle was rescued in injured condition behind Surat Air Port on Tuesday and after treatment it was released in Arabian Sea at Hazira.
Locals working at Shrimp farms behind Surat Air Port alerted Prayas Team Environment, an NGO, about the turtle. When the team rescued the turtle it was unable to return to sea due to weak front right flipper. Due to injury it was unable to move it properly.
It was later rescued and brought to the shelter for treatment. "The injury in flipper happened mostly due to tangling in fishing net. It was a thin cut and about to get healed completely but due to the cut it was partially immovable," said Darshan Desai of Prayas.
The turtle was given injectable antibiotic and pain killer as per the treatment protocol.
The turtle was around 2 feet long and weighing 22 kilo. Due to high wind the volunteers could not go into deep sea in a boat and the release was done at the beach. On being released on shore water the turtle comfortably moved into the waters. Active stroke movement of the turtle was notices when released, the volunteers informed.
