GURGAON: Concerned at the diminishing number of Siberian cranes in Sultanpur, the wildlife department is now planning to develop another water body in the bird sanctuary.
A proposal about developing the new water body has been prepared after analyzing the wildlife official noticed a decrease in the number of migratory birds like Siberian cranes and flamingoes.
The main reason for the sharp decline in their number is because of the nature of the water in Sultanpur lake. Birds such as Siberian cranes are used to seawater which is more salty then lake water.
The wildlife department officials have sent a proposal to develop another lake to the ministry of environment. A wildlife official said that the number of Siberian cranes has come down because the birds do not like the water of the lake. The sanctuary's lake gets water from Gurgaon canal whose water is treated and doesn't have salinity.
To tackle the salinity aspect of the water the wildlife department plans to use borewell water for the new water body in the sanctuary. The department has earmarked land, measuring about 2 acres for the purpose.
Work will begin soon after the green light from the environment ministry. Another wildlife department official is expecting the new borewell water lake to attract a large number of migratory birds including the Siberian cranes, which are the main attraction among the winged visitors for the tourists. The entire project might take six months to complete.
Meanwhile, the wildlife department is to open the bird sanctuary for visitors at the end of September.
From the first week of October, hundreds of migratory birds will be flocking to Sultanpur. To ensure the safety of migratory birds in Sultanpur bird sanctuary, the wildlife department has restricted entry into a one-kilometre area around the circular track of the bird sanctuary lake.

All the migratory birds prefer to remain near the lake which makes it the main attraction for the visitors.
