Migratory birds flock to Tenughat dam in Bokaro
Migratory birds from different parts of central Asia have started flocking the Tenughat Dam in Gomia block of the district.
The arrival of migratory birds this winter has turned the reservoir into a hot tourist spot. A forest team led by divisional forest officer (DFO) of Bokaro, K Manish Arvind, confirmed the arrival of migratory birds.
The influx of migratory birds was delayed by 10-15 days in comparison to last year as they are normally known to arrive by mid-December. Local residents claim to have spotted two species of migratory birds- Red Crested Poachard and Pintail.
Arvind said they spotted 150-200 migratory birds mostly the Red Crested Poachard close to warer bodies. "We are preparing to set up a camp here close to the dam in first week of January to take a note of other species of birds arriving at the dam," said Arvind.
These birds arrive at the onset of winter season and leave when the season changes. Arvind said they have heard about other migratory birds like Starling, Ruff, Combed duck flocking at the dam in winter, but haven't seen them yet this season. "We are hopeful of spotting them in our next visit," he said.
The forest officers also said that they are also consulting local bird watchers to collect information about the various species of migratory birds. Sunday witnessed huddle of tourists at Tenughat Dam.
