Male leopard killed in road accident on highway at Vasai

A male leopard was allegedly run over by an unidentified vehicle on the highway at Vasai on Tuesday night.

MUMBAI: A male leopard was allegedly run over by an unidentified vehicle on the highway at Vasai on Tuesday night.

Eye-witnesses said that the male leopard along with his female companion was crossing the road when it was hit by a speeding vehicle near Vasai phata on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway at around 10.30pm. The male leopard died on the spot while the female is believed to have escaped in the nick of time.

Officials from the Tungareshwar forest range said that the leopard was around one year old and may have ventured out for food. Officials said that leopards often cross the highway during night hours.

The fire brigade along with forest officials rushed to the spot. A huge crowd of on-lookers and vehicle users gathered at the spot to see the leopard. The body was taken to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivli for autopsy.
