Mahotsav to make green cover grow

LUCKNOW: Lucknow: Plantation of 3 crore saplings would kickstart Van Mahotsav this year. The forest department organises the mahotsav between July 1 and 7 every year, since 1950.

The event calls for public participation in protecting the green cover in the state. The green cover could prevent phenomenon like land fissures and temperature fluctuations, which are caused due to exploitation of natural resources. The week-long event has three main aims – to increase forest cover in the state, to increase green cover on non-forest land and to have one-third land area as green cover.

The area for plantation has been increased this time with around 3 crore 61 lakh saplings to be planted on 55,600 hectare. In 2010-11, the department had planted 3 crore 57 lakh saplings on 55,000 hectare. Out of the total target, forest department will plant 2 crore 66 lakh saplings on 41,000 hectare in 74 forest divisions of the state.
Besides this, the rural development department will plant over 65 lakh saplings on 10,000 hectare. The housing and urban development will plant 7.15 lakh saplings over 1,100 hectare while the industrial and irrigation department will plant 6.5 lakh saplings on 1,000 hectare.

PWD will plant 4.8 lakh over 750 hectare. Land and water resource department will plant 3.4 lakh over 500 hectare. Over 97,500 saplings would be planted by the energy department on 150 hectare and cooperatives will plant 65,000 saplings on 100 hectare.

The species to be planted will be different for different agri-climatic zones.
The mahotsav is of importance given the fact that despite a huge plantation target set by the forest department year after year, the green cover is still staggering at 9.01%.
