Leopard strays into CRPF camp in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A leopard strayed into a CRPF camp in the Nine Mile area on the Guwahati-Shillong Road here today.

Official sources said the full-grown male leopard strayed from the nearby hills into a room where two CRPF jawans were sleeping but the duo managed to escape unhurt.

The CRPF personnel locked up the leopard in the room and informed the forest department.

Forest department employees tranquilised the feline animal and took it away to the Assam State Zoo here.

Incidents of leopard straying into human habitats in the state has registered a significant increase in the past two months with more than 20 cases of leopard attacks reported so far.

The encroachment of forest areas for human habitations was reducing the leopards habitats leading to the man-animal conflict and forcing the animals to come out in search of food, environment groups pointed out.
