Leopard rescued from poachers' trap in West Bengal

An adult male leopard which fell into a trap laid by poachers was rescued by forest officials in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Saturday.

JALPAIGURI: An adult male leopard which fell into a trap laid by poachers was rescued by forest officials in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Saturday.

Wildlife warden Seema Chowdhury said local labourers found the leopard in a trap at the Telipara tea garden this morning and informed the forest department.

Forest department officials tranquilized the animal which had sustained injures in its right front foot, Chowdhury said.

The leopard was lifted from the trap, its injury attended to and was later released at the Tiger rescue Centre in Gorumara forest, the warden said.

Meanwhile, a wild cat was killed at Lataguri area under Mal subdivision on NH31 after being hit by a speeding vehicle today, Chowdhury said.

The cat was crossing the road when the accident occurred, the warden said.

The cat was later buried at the Animal Rescue Centre in Lataguri, the warden added.
