India may send tigers to Cambodia

There will be discussions on whether some tigers can be relocated from India to Cambodia, at the third Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation.

NEW DELHI: There will be discussions on whether some tigers can be relocated from India to Cambodia, at the third Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation. No evidence of tigers have been found in Cambodia since 2007 and the World Wide Fund for Nature recently declared tigers to be "functionally extinct" there.

"It is an idea that has been floated. There will be discussions during the conference. Nothing has been decided yet on this," said BS Bonal, additional director general (Project Tiger). Other participants from wildlife organisations confirmed that such an action is being considered. "India has more than 50% of the world's tigers so naturally they have requested for relocation from us. It will be important to see how such a relocation plays out and which tigers are selected," said a participant.
