Hundreds of fish were found afloat in Devarabeesanahalli lake, near Mahadevapura, southeast Bengaluru, on Thursday.

While a BBMP official said the lake was not under their jurisdiction and they could not confirm the incident, a lake activist, Vijay Nishanth, reached the lake late in the night and confirmed the fish death. "I rushed to the spot in the night and they were dead fishes not just in the lake but on the bank too," he said.

The BDA is the custodian of the lake, which had witnessed large scale fish death in June last year .

The lake is spread over 4-64 hectares and is surrounded by several posh apartment complexes.

It is not clear what is the cause of the fish death, the activist said, but he did not rule out untreated sewage water being released into the lake being a factor.

On March 7, thousands of fish were found dead in Ulsoor lake in the heart of the city.
