Goa to have its own forest policy in 6 months

PANAJI: Almost two decades after banking on a national forest policy, Goa has taken up the task to have a policy of its own in next six months.

This policy will take care of everything in totality. The basic framework of national forest policy has been kept in mind while drafting the state policy, chief conservator of forest Dr Shashi Kumar said.

The well researched policy framed by the department is currently being examined by state forest secretary Rajiv Yaduvanshi-led committee, that is giving final touches to the draft. At present, state follows national forest policy, 1988.

Once the draft policy is ready, it will be kept open for public suggestions and objections, Kumar said.

The policy clearly defines what do we want to do to the forest, forest dwellers and other stake holders. It will be a document based on which the department will function, he said.
