SEONI (MP): Five persons were on Monday arrested on the charges of hiding the skin of a dead black buck and eating meat of the protected animal, which they had found dead in a well here, a forest official said.

The accused found the black buck dead in a well this morning. They took it out, cooked its meat and ate it. They also concealed the hide in a field in village Panabudwani near here, deputy forest ranger (North Region) R K Rao said.

The animal, of a protected species, might have strayed into the village from nearby forests. Acting on a tip off, forest officials recovered the hide from the field, Rao said.

The accused will be produced before a court tomorrow, he added.
