Female elephant found dead near Mettupalayam forest range
A 20-year-old female elephant was found dead near Kallar railway gate in Mettupalayam forest range on late Monday evening.
But the authorities refused to confirm whether it was the calf of the deceased elephant. Meanwhile, the presence of another elephant in the region stalled the post mortem for a few hours till Tuesday morning as precautionary measures had to be taken to ensure whether more elephants of the herd could be present in the vicinity.
The local residents spotted the dead animal on Monday evening and alerted the forest officials. The dead animal was found lying on its side near the Kallar Railway Gate and a 7 year old male elephant calf was also found in the vicinity. There are high chances that the deceased animal was the mother of the young tusker but at the moment there is no official confirmation.
"There was no external injury and the cause of death has been confirmed as intestinal disorder," said an official.
The forest officials conducted a post-mortem on the carcass and it was revealed that the elephant was suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding and there were parasites inside its bowels and intestines. The deceased animal has been buriedafter the forest officials completed the formalities. Senior officials from the department also visited the spot.
Reports indicate that the dead animal was reportedly found near an area lying near the landholdings of a private school. However management representatives of the institution claimed that they did not own the land where the animal was found dead and it was away from their institution.
