Female elephant found dead in Nilgiris

A female elephant aged about 25 years was found dead in the Sigur range of forests in the Nilgiris on Saturday.

UDHAGAMANDALAM: A female elephant aged about 25 years was found dead in the Sigur range of forests in the Nilgiris on Saturday.

According to forest officials, the pachyderm had probably died a couple of days ago. The officials came across the carcass while on regular patrolling duty in the Mongapatty area in Anaikkatty north beat in the Sigur range of forests.

"It looks like the animal died of natural causes. A post-mortem has been conducted on the carcass and only after getting the report can we ascertain the cause of death," said S Ramasubramaniam, district forest officer (North), who visited the spot. After the postmortem on Saturday evening, the carcass was buried inside the forest.
