JAIPUR: Eleven spotted deer have died due to extreme cold conditions at Jaipur Zoo here in the last two days, state wildlife official sources said.

The deer, commonly known as chital, were suffering from suspected pneumonia and succumbed on January 16 and 17, they said, adding despite best efforts the animals died within two days after contracting the disease.

The carcasses of the herbivores, which were mostly five to ten years old, were buried after postmortem, they said.

According to a preliminary report, frost and dense fog, continuous low temperature for a week created unfavourable conditions which resulted in death due to suspected pneumonia.

When contacted deputy-chief wildlife warden at Jaipur Zoo Mr Y K Sahu said that there were sufficient night shelter for chital but these animals prefer to stay under the shade and protection of trees.

Meanwhile, People for Animals has demanded a high level inquiry into the untimely death of these animals.
