KOCHI: Hit by a car, an elephant panicked and ran into muddy slush, where it remained stuck for several hours before it was pulled out to safety by fire service officials and locals.

Hurt and in pain, the elephant caused anxious moments at nearby Kathrikadavu here.

After the pachyderm was hit by a car, the panic stricken animal began running helter skelter through various lanes and by lanes. The elephant also damaged the compound walls of some houses.

It ran into a muddy area near the backwaters and was rescued last night with the help of cranes, police said.
