Elephant falls into ditch, rescue operations on

An elephant from Mulund that was called in for marriage celebrations of a local MLA's son at Alibaug fell into a roadside ditch on its way back to Mumbai.

ALIBAUG: An elephant from Mulund that was called in for marriage celebrations of a local MLA's son at Alibaug, about 100-km from Mumbai, fell into a roadside ditch on its way back to Mumbai on the Alibaug Highway.

All efforts to rescue the animal failed on Saturday night and a renewed attempt to rescue it would now be made only on Sunday morning.

Villagers said three elephants were taken to Alibaug as a showpiece in the celebrations accompanying Nrupal Patil's wedding (Nrupal is the son of local PWP MLA Jayant Patil).

The elephants were the star attraction in the wedding and the newly-weds even took a joyride on one of the elephants after the ceremonies ended on Friday.
