Dogs fall prey to big cats in Gurgaon

Barely two months after one leopard was caught from near the Aravali Retreat farmhouses in Gurgaon, locals have claimed that they have spotted more big cats in the region during night.

GURGAON: Barely two months after one leopard was caught from near the Aravali Retreat farmhouses in Gurgaon, locals have claimed that they have spotted more big cats in the region during night. They also said that the cats mostly attack healthy dogs at regular intervals, because of which the number of dogs has drastically come down in the area.

Manisha Chaudhary, a business advisor, who recently shifted to the area from New Friends Colony, is one of those whose dog fell pray to a leopard on Friday evening. She claims that in past 19 days, since she has moved here, she has spotted three leopards.

"On April 30 evening, we spotted a leopard on the road. We stopped the car and it crossed the road. On Thursday, I saw a cub. These indicate there are a few leopards in this region and they are striking our dogs decisively,'' she added.

Manisha, who moved to Gurgaon to stay in a farmhouse on rent, close to her daughter's school, recalled how one of her dogs, Traimbak, was killed by a leopard.

"I was inside the house. When I asked the guards about my dog, they said that it was near the boundary wall. Immediately after that they told me it was missing. When we went close to the boundary, we discovered a huge hole on the wall," she said.

She suspected that the leopard had pulled Traimbak through the hole and they could trace him. "We doubt that either the big cat is an old one or a female with cubs. That's why it is targeting easy preys. We understand it's their habitat and what they are doing is natural. But we fail to understand why the authorities have given permission to such developments right inside the forest. They should either protect us or manage the animals,'' she pointed out.

Other residents complain that because of the authorities the battle between men and animal has begun.

A senior forest department official also said that though several objections have been raised by them against giving permission to such residential development, there has been no impact on the decision making.
