Delhi zoo’s 3-week-old white tiger cub dies

Almost 20 days after the Delhi zoo reported birth of two white tiger cubs, one died on Friday.

NEW DELHI: Almost 20 days after the Delhi zoo reported birth of two white tiger cubs, one died on Friday. Although zoo curator Riaz Khan claims that the cub died due to birth deformities and abnormalities, sources say she died of pneumonia.

The cub was shifted to the zoo hospital after she was found weak and listless on Thursday. “She was kept under observation but collapsed on Friday afternoon,” said Khan.

However, a source said, “The cub reported to have fallen into a water bowl kept in the cell for the mother. Water entered the respiratory tract following which she contracted pneumonia.”

The director has been informed about the incident and an inquiry will be conducted, the source added. However, the zoo spokesperson claimed that the cub was born a weakling and died of its deformities.

In January, the cubs — one male and one female — were born to Khushi, adding to the zoo’s kitty of seven white tigers. The zoo now has two adult male white tigers and five adult females. Of them, one female white tiger will be sent to Russia in exchange of a cougar pair.

Almost a month ago, a Royal Bengal Tiger died in the zoo of old age.
