China struggles to clear algae

More than 1,300 vessels were at sea cleaning the algae and inflatable barriers had been placed near the coastline to prevent it from moving to the shore.

BEIJING: Thousands of soldiers and volunteers worked at a frenetic pace to clear the huge algae bloom in the sea of east China in Qingdao, host of the Olympic sailing events.

More than 1,300 vessels were at sea cleaning the algae and inflatable barriers had been placed near the coastline to prevent it from moving to the shore.

The algae when first detected on May 31 off the Dagong Island had covered one third of the 50 sq km to be used for the sailing events. Emergency headquarters set up to clean the algae said its coverage in the sailing competition areas had shrunk from 32% five days ago to less than 10% on Friday.
