Black buck, Thamin deer die at Kanpur zoo
Two inmates of Kanpur zoo, one male Thamin deer and one male black buck, both belonging to schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, died on Sunday afternoon.
The veterinarians of the zoo, RK Singh and UC Srivastava performed the post-mortem examination of the two animals during the evening hours.
The zoo doctors have sent the samples of spleen, liver, kidney and heart of the black buck to Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly for further tests to ascertain the exact cause of the death.
The cause of the death of the Thamin deer is stated to be old age while the black buck died due to respiratory failure as said by the zoo doctors. After the death of the black buck only three male black bucks are left in the zoo.
Zoo director, Kuruvilla Thomas expressed concern over the death of the two animals, especially for the black buck.
"The cause of the death of the black buck could not be understood and to verify the reason of death the samples of liver, spleen, heart have been sent to IVRI in Bareilly for further tests. Soon, we will come to know about the cause of the death," said Thomas while talking to TOI.
On asking if the black buck died due to infighting with other males, the zoo director said this was to be cross checked.
Zoo veterinarian, RK Singh said after the post-mortem examination it has been ascertained that the black buck died due to respiratory failure.
