Black buck, deer rescued in Orissa

A black buck and a deer were rescued by villagers in Orissa's Ganjam district and separately handed over to the forest department.

BERHAMPUR (Orissa): A black buck and a deer were rescued by villagers in Orissa's Ganjam district and separately handed over to the forest department.

Villagers rescued the black buck, an endangered species, at Chikili under Khallikote forest range from the roadside yesterday, a forest official said.

The animal, which bore injury marks probably due to an accident, was undergoing treatment, the official said, adding it would be released in the forest after full recovery.

In an another rescue act, residents of Purunagumma village under Digapahandi forest range handed a four-year-old deer, which strayed in human habitation, to forest department on the same day, the official said.

The deer was later released in nearby Gaiba forest. It had apparently strayed in the village after its habitat was waterlogged due to the rains, the official added.
