Indore has around 6200 peacocks and dehydration and hunger emerge as main threat to lives of peacocks during summer. Every year dozens of peacock died due to dehydration despite forest department’s claim of making arrangement for water and food for national birds during summer.
Dr Sudhir Khetawat, chairman, MP Branch of Karuna International said that water level has gone down and most of the lakes and water bodies have dried up causing water problem for peacock.
However, DFO Saeed Khan said, “We had started peacock rehabilitation centre at our Navratan Bagh office and a veterinary doctor is stationed there. Officials are creating awareness about saving national birds.” He stressed that all necessary steps had been taken to save the lives of national birds.
Khetawat stressed that six years back Indore had more than 8000 peacocks today it has reduced to 6200 and if things continue like this then it may extinct from the area some day. “They are waiting for catastrophe to happen, action will be taken only when some thing drastic took place,” said Khetawat.
