200 weak trees to get 'treatment'

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified around 200 vulnerable trees in the city.

MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified around 200 vulnerable trees in the city.

Following a spate of trees falling across the city, the civic body had conducted a survey of tress in all the wards last week. In the second meeting between the administration and committee members, a slew of measures were drawn up. Over the next ten days, the committee members will divide the wards among themselves and verify the findings and suggest appropriate treatment.

The short-term treatment includes pruning and chopping extremely dangerous trees. “Our immediate priority is to save lives. We will also come up with long-term solutions which will eventually be our policy draft. Long-term plans may include suggestions like change in the type of plantations,” said tree expert Avinash Kubal, member of the committee.

The logistics for this exercise will be arranged by the civic body.
