KANPUR: In the current year, 14 zoo animals were adopted by individuals, NGOs and government offices. The adoption gives a chance to nature lovers to contribute towards wildlife conservation.

Adoption enables a person or an organisation to pay for animal's feed and its upkeep inside the zoo. The adoption period can range from a year or more.

Four months back, an orangutan was adopted by Punjab National Bank. Tigers Trusha and Abhay, two peacocks, a rhino, chimpanzee, one capuchin monkey and a pigeon have been adopted in the present year. The amount received by the Kanpur zoo administration is being used for providing feed to the animals.

Kanpur zoo director K Praveen Rao said that in last three years capuchin monkey, a macaw, three white peacocks, one tigress and several others animals were adopted.

After the formation of Kanpur Zoological Park Management and Development Society on August 25, 2011, the zoo now does not send this money to state government. The zoo administration has been given rights to keep the adoption money given by the individuals or the organizations, in a bank account and utilise it for the upkeep of animals.

The authorities of Life Insurance Corporation had adopted a capuchin monkey sometime ago and presented a cheque of Rs 10,000.
