Prez, PM call for a second green revolution
President Pratibha Patil and PM Manmohan Singh called for a second Green Revolution acknowledging the role played by Jagjivan Ram in organising the first phase in the 1970s.
Recalling various achievements and contributions of the Dalit leader on the occasion of his birth centenary, they pointed to the urgency of giving agriculture a new impetus. "We now need a second Green Revolution that will enhance our agricultural productivity and make India an agrarian superpower," Patil said urging scientists and policy-makers to work towards this objective.
For his part, the PM recalled a "brilliant disposition" by eminent agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan on "Babuji's contribution to the Green Revolution".
Singh said Swaminathan's appreciation "testifies" to Jagjivan Ram's leadership in modernising agriculture and increasing productivity.
Revisiting Jagjivan Ram's role during the freedom struggle and in the decades after Independence, Patil said,
"The standards set by Babu Jagjivan Ram and his ideals are an important legacy for the nation."
