Call to cut emission on World Environment Day

Imagine a day when all fuel-consuming vehicles are off the city roads. The environment would definitely be cleaner with less emission.

GUWAHATI: Imagine a day when all fuel-consuming vehicles are off the city roads. The environment would definitely be cleaner with less emission. Over and above this, a significant amount of fossil fuel will be saved in a place where over one lakh cars ply everyday. This is what the Centre for Rural Development (CRD) is planning to do on the occasion of World Environment Day on Sunday.

CRD, an NGO which was instrumental in launching a rickshaw bank in the city, has appealed to residents of the city to keep their cars away from the roads for at least two hours on that day so that it can spread the message of preserving fossil fuel. "Every day, more than one lakh vehicles ply in Guwahati. Even if we keep our vehicles off the roads for that period, we will be able to save not less than two lakh litres of fuel. This is a significant quantity and will contribute a lot in reducing emission," said CRD executive director Pradip Kumar Sarmah said.

On Sunday, the CRD has planned a "rickshaw rally" involving 300 Deep Bahans. The rally will start from Khanapara and end at Ganeshguri here. Prominent film personalities will flag off the rally. Similar rallies will be taken out in Baksa, Mirza and Morigaon.
