The Last of Us Season 2 kills this major character, and fans can’t believe it

The makers of The Last of Us are not yet done with surprises. After introducing new characters and giving the storyline a unique edge, the show has now killed one of its major characters in a shocking and devastating way. Based on the video game of the same name, The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where humans are turning into zombie-like creatures due to a fungal infection, leading to a pandemic of sorts.

The story focuses on Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey). Season two begins five years after the finale of the first season, where Joel massacred an entire faculty of scientists and doctors who wanted to kill Ellie to study her immunity against the fungal infection. In season 2, Joel and Ellie’s relationship has grown to become strained as they continue living in a protected community in Wyoming.

The second episode of this season comes like a massive shock to fans and audiences. In this episode, Joel is seen rescuing Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) from the infected; however, Abby manipulated the situation and trapped Joel by shooting him in the leg. Abby is out for revenge as her father was one of the doctors whom Joel had killed in season one.

After trapping Joel, Abby beat him brutally with a golf club, leaving just a little life in him. Meanwhile, Ellie was seen tracking Joel and finding the place where he was held by Abby. However, Ellie was captured as well and was forced to watch Abby kill Joel with a final blow. At the end of the scene, Ellie was shown crawling to Joel’s lifeless body.

Fans react to Joel’s death

This scene has devastated fans as the killing of Joel comes as a surprise to them. One fan tweeted, “They made it even worse in the show.” Another wrote, “This single shot from The Last of Us is going to haunt me forever.” Talking about the graphic intensity of the scene, someone commented, “I don’t know if there’s anything I’ll ever be able to do to emotionally recover from this moment.”

Pedro Pascal on Joel’s Death

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, actor Pedro Pascal talked about his character’s fate on the show. “It’s not like they said, ‘Hey, we kill you at the beginning of season 2,’ but it was always an understanding that it would stay true to the source material in a specific way,” the actor explained stating that the end of his character was destined and it was just a matter of how and when.
