Minecraft crosses $301 million globally: 10 video games-based movies that performed well at box office

A Minecraft Movie has exceeded all predictions to storm the box office, both in the US and across the rest of the world. Based on the video game of the same name, the movie stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge. The movie has collected $301 million globally since it was released on April 4.

Minecraft has proved to be a bigger than expected success for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. The film is now the biggest box office success of 2025 in the US, just behind Captain America: Brave New World. It is expected that the movie will dethrone Captain America soon to take the top spot.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)

Keanu Reeves’ addition to this franchise made it an even bigger success than its predecessors. The film, which collected over $462 million globally, also starred Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, Krysten Ritter and James Marsden.

Detective Pikachu (2019)

Ryan Reynolds played the iconic Pokemon character in this live action/animation hybrid. Detective Pikachu won a lot of critical acclaim for its engaging and emotional storyline. The movie grossed $449 million.


Rampage (2018)

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson starred in this video game adaptation to fight supersized monsters alongside a King Kong-like Gorilla. The movie earned $428 million.

Uncharted (2022)

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg teamed up in this adaptation of Sony’s famous video game. The movie became a box office success due to its stylish action sequences and Holland’s natural charisma.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Another $400 million grosser like Uncharted, the second part of the Sonic franchise managed to impress both audiences and critics.

The Angry Birds Movie (2016)
