1923 season 2 finale: Brandon Sklenar opens up on Alex and Spencer Dutton’s ‘heartbreaking’ story

The finale of 1923 season 2 aired on Sunday, leaving many fans disappointed about the fate of the main characters- Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra or Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) Dutton.

Now, Brandon Sklenar has opened up about the heart-wrenching scene at the end of the Yellowstone spin-off. The actor explained what his character Spencer felt in the last moments of the show and how “profoundly heartbreaking” it was.

1923 season 2 finale: What happened to Alex and Spencer?

The final episode saw Alexandra and Spencer Dutton reunite after a year apart. Alex, who was pregnant with Spencer’s first child, gave birth to a boy. Her near-death condition meant that the character passed away later, spending her final moments with her baby. Spencer was left a widower.

While it is not confirmed, the baby is the father of John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner in Yellowstone.

A voiceover explained that Spencer never remarried. He was shown lying down beside his wife's grave. The final moments of the show feature Alex and Spencer dancing in a ballroom, frozen in time. This implies that Spencer breathed his last at his wife’s grave.

Brandon Sklenar on 1923 season 2 finale

Brandon Sklenar told Screenrant that his character found it difficult to accept death. He also spoke about the impact the scene had on him.

“It was heartbreaking. I had a hard time not getting too emotional filming that scene, definitely, so we had to pull it back a lot. "Your legs are a long way from your heart..." That line just gets me every time. I mean, there's so much in that short exchange, and so much not being said. He's (Spencer) not wanting to accept it, but he knows that it's the right thing to do. There's the profound feeling of love that he has for her (Alexandra) in that moment, knowing that he's not going to get a minute to show her how much she means to him. Having to live with that for your entire rest of your life is profoundly heartbreaking,” the actor said.

Will there be a third season of 1923?

Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer played the lead roles in 1923. As of now, no third season has been officially announced. There is another Yellowstone spin-off, 1944, that is reportedly in the works.

There is no confirmation on whether Spencer Dutton will return as a character in the spin-off.
