Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said “sheer arrogance” of Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee “has pushed the state towards an emergency-like situation.”

“This election resembles the election that took place after the Emergency,” said Modi at a rally in Basirhat constituency, which is located near the border with Bangladesh.

Modi said: “Mamata Banerjee has declared a war not only against the BJP workers and its supporters but also against the common people of Bengal.”


“Didn’t didi say at a public rally some days back that she will take revenge? And days after that, the BJP president was attacked. Where is the democracy in Bengal? The very democracy that brought didi to power is now under threat from her.”

Referring to the violence at BJP chief Amit Shah’s rally, Modi blamed Banerjee for instigating and mobilising Trinamool workers. “We are thankful to the people of Bengal that they took stones, which were pelted at Amit Shah, on themselves.

They guarded him like a shield. He is fine because the young people of Bengal. This makes didi angry.” Basirhat, which saw communal flare-up in 2017, is one of the constituencies which BJP is eyeing in this Lok Sabha polls. Modi said Banerjee’s “autocratic rule was first called out by college students 4-5 years ago. Their questions had so angered the CM that she walked out of a television talk show.”

Referring to BJP worker Priyanka Sharma’s arrest, he said: “You are artist and a painter. Many of your art works were purchased by the owners of Saradha and other chit fund companies. Paint an ugly picture or a caricature of me. Make a meme of mine. Gift it to me after May 23 when I am the prime minister again. I promise that I will accept the picture and keep it with me for the rest of my life. I will never lodge an FIR against you.”
