Kolkata: BJP Basirhat candidate Rekha Patra, face of Sandeshkhali movement, participated in her first roadshow and procession in Basirhat today, which ended with a small roadside meeting, kicking off her first major campaign. The procession was led by the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari.

Following the huge assembly of people at the procession and road show, Adhikari called it "people's tsunami". People want to get rid of Trinamool Congress."

Following the procession, in a small road-side programme, Adhikari asked, ""Do you know who has chosen Rekha Patra? This Dalit daughter has been selected by PM Narendra Modi. The more you insult this young girl, the more you are insulting the poor. We will win this Lok Sabha seat and send her to New Delhi."

"All injustice and wrongdoing in Basirhat will stop and development will be undertaken by Rekha Patra under guidance of Modi," Suvendu Adhikari said.

"I am your poor sister. I will take forward the movement. I will urge all to stay with me and I will work for you," Rekha Patra said.

It is known that Modi has been handpicked Rekha Patra to fight Basirhat seat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called BJP Basirhat candidate and Sandeshkhali assault survivor Rekha Patra on Tuesday to assure her of all support and expressed his optimism about her victory in the elections. Describing her as “Shakti Roopa”, PM said it is unfortunate that many people of Basirhat have not been allowed to vote since 2011.
