The CPM has written to the Election Commission of India urging it to take adequate measures to ensure that it is allowed to campaign for the upcoming elections in West Bengal without obstruction or intimidation.

EC is learnt to be closely examining the CPM representation that was submitted to it on April 9 following attacks on its candidates allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers.

In a communication to the Chief Election Commissioner, senior CPM politburo member Nilotpal Basu has urged the Election Commission to take “urgent and firm measures’ to “ensure that the Opposition, particularly the Left, can carry out its campaign without obstruction or intimidation’.

“This is the bedrock for free and fair poll for which EC is responsible,” Basu has written. His letter attaches a communication form Surjyakanta Mishra, secretary CPM West Bengal state committee, on the alleged ‘terror tactics of the AITC’. Mishra lists instances of attacks against its candidates for Asansol and 21 Diamond Hrabour constituency besides the Basirhat constituency.
