KOLKATA: The Election Commission of India has transferred, and barred from any poll duty, four senior IPS officers that include the commissioner of Kolkata Police and Commissioner of Bidhannagar (Salt Lake). The other two officers who face ECI action include the superintendents of police of two sensitive areas - Birbhum and Diamond Harbour.

While Birbhum is a political hotbed and known for excessive poll violence; Diamond Harbour is the seat of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek.

According to the order, Anuj Sharma the CP of Kolkata Police and Gyanwant Singh, the CP of Bidhannagar, were allegedly a part of the Chief Minister’s ‘dharna’ that took place in early February, this year.


Complaints have also been made by BJP leaders against these two SPs (superintendents of police), said sources.

The ECI order further mentions that Rajesh Kumar, ADG, pollution control board will be posted as CP, Kolkata while Natarajan Ramesh Babu will be the new CP of Bidhannagar.

Kumar served as ADG, CID before being posted as ADG, Pollution control board. The order also mentions ,” the present incumbent officers being shifted (are) not to be involved in any election duty” by the state government.
