Mayawati & Akhilesh Yadav train guns on BJP, Congress in Varanasi

Varanasi: A day after Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s roadshow in Varanasi, BSP chief Mayawati and SP national president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday addressed a joint rally of the BSP-SP-RLD in Varanasi’s Seer Govardhan area and targeted both Congress and BJP.

The rally was a show of strength for the BSP-SP alliance in order to unite anti-Modi voters in Varanasi and its adjacent Chandauli seats. The alliance candidates—Shalini Yadav (Varanasi) and Sanjay Chauhan (Chandauli) – were present too. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will contest from Varanasi, which will go to the polls in the seventh phase on May 19.

Accusing the Congress of not doing its work honestly, Mayawati said the Congress, which ruled at the Centre as well as in many states for a long time, was dislodged from power because of its wrong policies. She said Congress’ failure to deliver results finally led to the birth of the parties such as BSP and SP.


She blamed BJP for protecting the interest of capitalists. She said BJP had failed to fulfil the promises made by it during the 2014 election campaign. “This time BJP will be dislodged from power,” she said. She also said there is no change in the condition of the poor people belonging to upper castes.

Referring to demonetisation and the GST, she said it had badly impacted the country’s economy.

She also said river Ganga could not be cleaned. Akhilesh said the country is going to get a new prime minister after the polls. “ Only seven days are left and there will be a new prime minister,” said Akhilesh.

He also blamed PM Modi for not fulfilling his promise of transforming Varanasi into a smart city like Kyoto.
