Controversy erupts over Arun Govil's statement on Constitution: Here is what he said
Controversy has erupted over Arun Govil, BJP's candidate from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, after a viral video shows him discussing potential changes to the Constitution. Meanwhile, PM Modi rebukes Congress allegations of BJP tampering with the Constitu...

A video has gone viral on social media in which he can be seen talking about the Constitution. Answering a question by a reporter on the opposition's allegation that the Modi government will change the Constitution after coming to power again at the Centre, Arun Govil said, "The Constitution has witnessed changes over a period of time. Change is a sign of development. It's not a bad thing. Situations were different at that time; the current situation is different, so if changes are to be made... The Constitution doesn't change with one person's intention. It can be changed with everybody's consensus. If anything happens..." he can be heard saying in the viral video.
This statement has prompted reactions from various political figures, including AAP leader Sanjay Singh, who accused the BJP of intending to undermine the Constitution.
Attacking BJP, AAP leader Sanjay Singh shared the video of Arun Govil saying: "The 85 per cent Dalits, backwards, deprived and exploited people of the country, beware. It is now clear that BJP will destroy the Constitution. The reservation will end. After Lallu Singh, Jyoti Mirdha, Anant Hegde, now even Arun Govil has said it. Arun Govil is directly Modi ji's candidate."
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a rally in Rajasthan's Barmer last week, rebuked Congress accusations that the BJP would alter the Constitution if re-elected, affirming, "The Constitution can't be abolished even by Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar himself."
"Aur jahan tak samvidhan ka sawal hai, aap maan ke chaliye, aur Modi ke shabd likh ke rakhiye, Babasaheb Ambedkar khud aa jaayein toh bhi samvidhan khatm nahi kar sakte hain," Modi stated, emphasizing that not even Ambedkar could abolish the Constitution.
Modi criticised Congress for alleging BJP's intent to alter the Constitution. He accused Congress of historical discrimination against SC/ST and OBCs, stating, "Lying in the name of the Constitution has become a fashion for all the constituents of the INDI alliance whenever elections come."
Modi affirmed the government's reverence for the Constitution, asserting, "For the government, our Constitution is Gita, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Bible, and Quran." He highlighted his government's initiatives, including celebrating Constitution Day and developing sites associated with Babasaheb.
