Lok Sabha Election 2024: 102 seats, 21 states vote in phase 1; key contests to watch out for
GADCHIROLI: From the chaos of bullets to the serenity of ballots, a remarkable transformation is unfolding in Maharashtra's Maoist heartland. Vikas Kumre, a resident of Gardewara village, dodging splinters from multiple IED explosions during the 2019 LS polls. Now, in 2024, he stands witness to a vibrant electoral process just 6km away from the Maoist stronghold of Abujmarh.

Polling Stations in "liberated" corridor
In a historic move, helicopters buzz overhead, dropping off poll officials and C-60 commandos to secure the area. These actions mark the inauguration of 11 polling stations in a Maoist "liberated" corridor after 77 years of silence. This corridor stretches across the Dandakaranya forests, spanning 100 km along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border.

For years, fear gripped the hearts of villagers living in this "Red corridor," depriving them of their democratic rights. But now, thanks to a fortified police station established in Gardewara earlier this year, residents finally have the opportunity to cast their votes without fear of retribution.

Gadchiroli SP Neelotpal expressed the significance of this milestone, aiming for zero casualties this time around. Meanwhile, security measures are being ramped up in 428 critical booths along the Maoist transit route.

Facing challenges
Despite the progress, challenges persist. Devaji Mattami pointed out the lack of basic amenities like mobile towers and stable power supply, making it difficult for candidates to campaign effectively. Nevertheless, the residents of Aheri, a particularly sensitive area, eagerly prepare to host 10 polling stations for the first time.

Safeguarding voters
Gardewara, a sensitive booth situated near a new police post, will be heavily guarded, ensuring the safety of voters and poll officials alike. Commandos embark on area domination exercises, securing the hills and thwarting potential threats.

In Kothi village, security personnel stand watch to safeguard voters crossing the Parlakota river, while Dhodraj armed outpost faces its own set of challenges. Amidst the fear of Maoist reprisals, security forces conduct area domination exercises to ensure the safety of voters.
