New Delhi: The nomination of Samajwadi Party's (SP) candidate from Khajuraho Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh was rejected by the returning officer on Friday. Under the INDI alliance deal, Congress had given the seat to the Samajwadi Party.

On April 3, SP candidate Meera Yadav filed her nomination paper from the seat. April 4 was the last date for filing nominations.

Sources told ET that the returning officer cited two reasons for the rejection. Meera Yadav didn't submit the verified voters' list and her signature was missing at one place.

"If the returning officer has found this, he should have intimated us. We were able to rectify the error. We had applied for the verified voters' list on April 2 and it was not made available to us on April 3. At that time, the available voters' list was submitted," Deepak Yadav, SP leader and husband of Meera Yadav told media persons.

Yadav said the party will support an Independent candidate and a decision will be taken soon. The party is in the process of moving the court against the rejection.

SP president Akhilesh Yadav calls it a blatant murder of democracy.

"If the signatures were not there, then why did the inspecting officer take the form? All these are excuses and frustration of the defeated BJP. Those who can cheat in front of the court's camera, what kind of conspiracies must be hatched behind the back after getting the form," Akhilesh Yadav posted on X.
