The upcoming years belong to the BJP era, Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared on Wednesday. Speaking in Alappuzha, Kerala, on the last day of campaigning before the state goes to LS polls on Friday, he said the Communist party was finished in India, just as it had been ended all over the world, and so was the Congress.

“This Lok Sabha election is the one to make India the world’s third-largest economy. Giving Narendra Modi and the BJP a third time will make India number one in the world in the fields of agriculture, manufacturing and technology,” he said.

With a dismal performance in the 2019 general elections where the party was unable to win even a single seat in the state, the BJP is sparing no effort to turn people’s opinions in its favour in Kerala this year, an uphill task in a state that has historically swung ideologically left.

Shah on Wednesday attacked this very ideology, saying that both the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and the Congress-led UDF were “cheating” the people of Kerala. “Their selfish agenda of securing a minority vote bank has made them support the Popular Front of India (PFI). The Congress has the Social Democratic Party of India’s (PFI) support. Those who want to make India an Islamic State are supporting the Congress,” he said.

Shah further claimed that the Congress also enjoys the support of the Welfare Party of India - a political outfit backed by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind - while the Left has the backing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which is led by Abdul Nazer Mahdani - an accused in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blasts case. “Only the BJP is committed to ensuring unity and development in the country,” he said.

Shah also attacked the Left for its poll promise of banning all nuclear weapons if the party came to power. “India will remain an atomic power and there will be no meddling with its national security,” he declared.
