Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi has made a special election appeal to the all-important women's segment, assuring them that the Congress would stand by them with welfare schemes meant to uplift them and change their condition.

Maintaining that the women were hit the hardest by the inflation, Gandhi tried to woo them by citing the Congress' election promise of direct money transfer to women as well as the welfare schemes of the Congress governments of Karnataka and Telangana.

"From the struggle for Independence to the making of modern India, women have played a very important role. But our women today are facing great difficulty in the face of surging inflation. To do justice to their struggle and penance, the Congress has come forward with a revolutionary guarantee. With the Congress' 'Mahalakshmi' guarantee, we will give a woman of every poor family Rs one lakh every year.," Gandhi said in an appeal to women.

She recalled the policy initiatives of the UPA regime to highlight the party's welfarist credentials. "The Congress, through its policies, be it MGNREGA or Right to Information, Right to Education or Right to Food, has given lakhs of Indians strength and security. "Mahalakshmi" is our latest guarantee..., she said.
