Guwahati: Congress president Rahul Gandhi has said his party will ensure that the Citizenship Amendment Bill is never passed, alleging that the bill is an assault on the language, culture and tradition of northeast India.

Addressing election rallies in Dimapur in Nagaland, and Bokakhat and Lakhimpur in Assam on Wednesday, Gandhi said while BJP president Amit Shah has said his party will ensure that bill is passed in Parliament, Congress will not allow it. “Several people from northeast India met me and I assured them I will oppose the bill and we did it in Rajya Sabha,” he said in one of the rallies.

Northeast India witnessed raging protest against the bill that proposes to make minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible to apply for Indian citizenship.

The Lok Sabha had passed the bill on January 8, but due to stiff opposition from the opposition as well as some allies, the government did not introduce the bill in Rajya Sabha.

“BJP does not want Naga people to look back at their history proudly, and express themselves,” Gandhi said in Dimapur. “We will not allow them to crush your thinking, religion and culture.”
