Rahul Gandhi alleges Narendra Modi made false promises to the poor

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of making false promises to the poor and working for select corporate giants by offering them huge debt waivers. He said the Nyay scheme of assured income promised by the Congress was feasible and would help wipe out poverty from the country.

The Congress chief addressed three election rallies in Haryana, where he also assured easy funds to youth to start businesses. Gandhi also joined the Haryana Congress’ Parivartan bus yatra. The Congress is not only seeking to win as many of the state’s 10 Lok Sabha seats as possible, but also aiming to wrest power from the BJP in the assembly polls later this year. But internal rifts are a worry for the party in Haryana.Gandhi termed the party’s proposed Nyay scheme as a historical one. “We will ensure Rs 72,000 per annum to families who earn below Rs 12,000 per month and it will benefit 20% of poor families,” he said.

He said the idea of the scheme cropped up after he saw Modi’s speech on similar cash assistance schemes. “I asked the party’s think tank to work on the concept and they worked on it for several months. The scheme is feasible and we will introduce it in phases,” he said. He said the country could afford to give Rs 3.6 lakh in five years to 20% of the poorest families. “Modi has given Rs 3.5 lakh crore to corporate giants and we will give Rs 3.6 lakh to poor families,” he said.
