A day after results were declared, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday tendered his resignation along with Cabinet to President Droupadi Murmu, said Rashtrapati Bhavan in its official statement.
The statement added that President Murmu has accepted PM Modi's resignation. She further requested him to continue till new government assumes office, added Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The resignation comes before PM Modi takes oath again for third time.
Earlier during the day, PM Modi chaired the last cabinet meeting of 17th Lok Sabha. The said meeting was held to take stock of the Lok Sabha election results and likely government formation following the BJP-led NDA winning a majority of seats in the house.
Additionally, the cabinet also recommend the dissolution of the current Lok Sabha. The term of the current 17th Lok Sabha ends on June 16.

The BJP on its own got 240 seats and the NDA a clear majority in the 543-member house, while the principal opposition party Congress bagged 99 seats.
