Babun Banerjee refuted speculations of joining the BJP but indicated his contemplation of running as an independent candidate in the Howrah Lok Sabha polls.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee has distanced herself from her younger brother, Babun Banerjee, after he voiced his dissatisfaction with the party's decision to field Prasun Banerjee from the Howrah Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee made this statement during a press interaction in Jalpaiguri.

She criticized her brother for causing trouble before every election and expressed her aversion to giving tickets based on family connections, stating that she does not believe in dynasty politics. She declared that she has decided to sever ties with Babun Banerjee. When asked about his potential defection to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mamata Banerjee stated that he is free to do as he pleases and that the party supports their official candidate, Prasun Banerjee.

Babun Banerjee, who is currently in New Delhi, denied rumors of joining the BJP but mentioned that he is considering contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Howrah as an independent candidate. He expressed his displeasure with the selection of Prasun Banerjee and claimed that there were more deserving candidates who were overlooked.

He also mentioned the insult he faced from Prasun in the past. Prasun Banerjee, a former footballer, has previously served as a two-time Lok Sabha MP from the TMC in Howrah. Babun Banerjee asserted that he is a registered voter in Howrah and, although he knows Mamata Banerjee may disagree, he is willing to contest as an independent candidate if necessary. When questioned about the possibility of joining the BJP, he categorically denied it, stating his loyalty to Mamata Banerjee and his connection with sports, which has introduced him to several BJP leaders who share the same interest.
